Mortality schedules list people who died during the previous 12 months. Mortality schedules were taken along with population schedules during the,and censuses, and in six states (Colorado, Florida, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, and South Dakota) in These schedules include persons who died between June 1st through May 31st in the year.

I used the Mortality schedule for Illinois to find my 2nd great-grandparents. Two of their children had died in the year preceding the census and were recorded in the mortality schedule. But I was unable to locate the family in the actual census.
